DF: What led you to develop an interest in aviation?
JH: In 2004, my dad’s brother got married to his long-time partner in Wales, Great Britain.
This was the first time I had ever been on an aircraft. I was 11 at the time of our trip over and at that point I became fascinated by civil airliners. I remember waiting for our connecting flight to London in Los Angeles and just sat staring out the gate windows looking at the aircraft taxiing by and also trying to go to different parts of the terminal to see other airport scenery.
DF: When did you start your diecast aircraft collection? What was your first model?
JH: It was at the start of 2015 when I decided I wanted to start collecting models. Being a New Zealander, and an Air New Zealand fan, I decided the scope I wanted to go for was a 1:200 diecast Air New Zealand fleet. The first model purchase I made was a 1:200 diecast JC Wings Air New Zealand Boeing 777-300ER model.
DF: What scale models sizes are part of your collection?
JH: I only collect 1:200 diecast models. As mentioned above, the scope I initially wanted to go for was an Air New Zealand fleet only. I then found what I thought was a great bargain for a 1:200 Aviation200 Air Pacific Boeing 737-800 model which I had to go for. The detail in the models made me want more. Like alot of other collectors, I then started to collect outside of my criteria and things just got bigger from there.
DF: What is your favorite aircraft?
JH: I have two favorite aircraft; the Boeing 747-400 and the Boeing 777-300ER. The 747-400 comes as no surprise as this was the first aircraft I flew on. The 777-300ER to me, I don’t even know why I like it, I just do. It’s a great looking aircraft.
DF: What is the favorite aircraft in your collection?
JH: I have two favorites in my collection, the Air New Zealand 747-400 (Pacific Wave)
as well as Air New Zealand 777-300ER (The Hobbit).
DF: How many diecast aircraft are part of your collection?
JH: My Air New Zealand model fleet consists of 32 models. This collection will soon expand to include 53 models.

DF: Most desired model you’re currently seeking?
JH: At this stage, I am not really looking for any models, however there are two models I am aware of in the 1:200 diecast Air New Zealand related model lineup that I currently do not have to complete a full 1:200 diecast Air New Zealand model fleet. These are:
1:200 Inflight200 Air New Zealand McDonnell Douglas DC-10 ZK-NZM
1:200 SkyClassics Short S.45 Solent Flying Boat ZK-AMO
DF: Do you have any plans to expand your current collection?
JH: In fact, the complete opposite! I am heading to Europe in mid-2018 and will be looking for some funding to be able to get there. Not only that, I have also decided that I do want to limit my collection back to just Air New Zealand models as well as aircraft I have flown on (Lufthansa Airbus A340-600 & Boeing 747-400) and also maybe a couple special models like the Etihad Airbus A340-600 (Formula 1). I currently have 3 models on the way which I ordered in Jan17. They are the 1:200 JC Wings Boeing House Boeing 747-400 (N401PW), Gemini Jets British Airways Boeing 747-400 (G-BYGE), and the Gemini Jets Emirates A380 (A6-EUE).

Congratulations Justin. You have a great collection there. However, a few corrections:
– The ‘Pacific Wave’ designation refers to the distinctive 2-colour curvy graphic on the fuselage. If its not there, its not a ‘Pacific Wave’ livery, i.e. you can’t have an “Air New Zealand Pacific Wave (No Wave)” scheme,
– Air NZ has not yet produced a ‘Retro’ livery for any of its aircraft. For a livery to be considered ‘Retro’ it needs to be a previous scheme represented on a current aircraft. The models which you refer to in your collection as such depict aircraft painted in the current schemes for their time, i.e. not ‘Retro’.

I have since changed the Pacific Wave livery name to “Pacific Wave – Simplified” as I read that on another website recently.
Yes I also know about the “retro” scheme and how that works however that is what people seem to have been calling it and I have just stuck with the trend on calling it a “retro” livery, even though it isn’t one.
I have the recent 1:200 Air New Zealand Boeing 747-400 ZK-NBV (LotR – Frodo) on order to add to my fleet which is exciting and I have sent a list off to Gemini Jets on future possible Air New Zealand models that I and many other New Zealand/Air New Zealand collectors would be keen to see produced so hopefully watch this space!
Hi Justin , The SkyClassics Solent is a nice model . Take care when removing from the package . It has a very fine aerial line from the tail to
the Fuse. Easy to miss and break . I also collect Air NZ 1/400 mainly , but with quite a number of 1/200 and have a rare Pheonix custom 737 – 300 ZK-FRE in the green livery . Happy collecting .
